Does Insurance Pay for Dental Implants and Other Common Questions

Dental implants are becoming a more common treatment, but many people have questions about cost, recovery time, and other important topics before moving ahead with the procedure. A dental implant is like a natural tooth root that sits atop your jawbone and acts as an anchor for replacement teeth.

If you’re considering dental implant surgery, it’s extremely important that you learn how much of the cost your insurance will cover. You’ll also want to gain a complete understanding of the total procedure and any other associated expenses you may incur.

Does insurance pay for dental implants?

Unfortunately, there’s not always a clear answer to this question. In most cases, insurance companies that have implant coverage only cover a percentage of the procedure’s total cost. There’s very little chance that an insurance company will be willing to cover the complete cost of the procedure, and what they do cover will come out of the patient’s dental insurance max.

How much do dental implants cost with insurance?

Dental implants cost thousands of dollars. Many patients don’t realize this until they’re at the dentist. A single implant (just the implant, not the tooth) will likely cost anywhere from $1,800 to $2,200 depending on what insurance the patient has.

The cost of an abutment and crown will likely be anywhere from $2,000 to $2,300, again depending on the patient’s coverage. So, the cost of an implant and crown together can range from around $3,800 to $4,500. Still, there are many variables that go along with these numbers that can change the costs significantly. These include:

  • Does the patient require a bone graft?
  • Do they need an extraction?
  • How many implants are being done?
  • Are extra consultations required before the procedure?

The only real way to get a firm understanding of how much your dental implants will cost is by setting up a consultation with a professional. If you’re located in the metro Detroit area you can set up a free consultation with Fortson Dentistry and we can help answer your questions and help assess your situation to figure out how much dental implants will cost for you.

What to expect after a dental implant?

Immediately following the implant placement, the tissue around it begins to heal. It can take a month before the swelling subsides enough to allow full function. By two weeks after the implant placement, most patients report feeling like they “have something missing” in their mouths but are still very happy with their new smile. Most people feel comfortable eating regular foods after four to six weeks. However, some patients still notice a slight numbness until the healing is completed.

Getting dental implants is a big decision. For many a huge factor in deciding whether or not to get implants will be whether their insurance will help cover the cost. Some insurance carriers do help cover some of the cost of implants, but there are many factors that come into play as far as your insurance provider, type of coverage, and the individual factors relating to the type of implant(s) you need. The best way to find answers to your questions on the cost of implants is to set up a consultation with your dentist.
